Mabey Bridge’s Bernera Bridge replacement project acknowledged for outstanding achievement at Bridges Awards 2022

Mabey Bridge, an Acrow Group company specialising in modular steel bridging, is happy to announce that The Great Bernera Bridge Replacement Project in Scotland’s Western Isles has been recognised for a Bridges Award 2022. The 2022 awards were announced at a ceremony on 9 March at the 30th annual Bridges conference to acknowledge outstanding achievement in UK bridge projects.

The Bernera Bridge project, was the winner in the Bridge Construction category, recognising the accomplishments of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (The Western Isles Council) and its team of engineering experts, who worked in partnership with Mabey Bridge on this esteemed project.

The critical project utilised Mabey Bridge’s modular steel Delta™ bridge to permanently replace a deteriorated concrete structure linking the islands of Great Bernera and Lewis in Scotland’s Western Isles. The 99-metre-long clear span structure engineered for the project enabled a quicker, easier and more cost-effective installation than other construction methods. In addition, the remote site location and limited availability of a footprint in which to build made Mabey Bridge’s versatile modular bridge system an ideal solution. Environmentally, Mabey Bridge’s clear span structure minimised the potential for disruption to aquatic habitats, as it required no construction activity in the water.

Michael Treacy, CEO Mabey Bridge said,

“We would like to take this opportunity to recognise all of the local companies whose skills, expertise and professionalism contributed greatly to the success of Bernera Bridge project. We are honoured to have worked on this project and offer our sincere congratulations to everyone at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar on the successful completion of this iconic bridge.”
